Chain drives in power transmission and conveyor systems, though sprockets can engage any perforated material. Chain drives can be highly efficient and reliable in applications with limited shock and torque loads, provided the drive is well maintained.

Chain drives can produce a mechanical advantage as speed reducers/increasers, created by utilizing sprockets of varying sizes.

While related to gears, a sprocket's main differences are that it never engages another sprocket directly and a sprocket's radial projections require a sloped profile for smooth chain engagement and release.

The plate sprocket that does not need heat treatment can be made of Q235, Q345 (16Mn), or 10, 20 steel. Generally, the hardness is below HBl40, which is suitable for the processing of medium speed, medium power and larger chain wheels. Drive chain sprockets requiring heat treatment are generally made of 45 steel, 45 steel forging, 45 cast steel or 4OCr steel. They are suitable for the processing of driving and driven sprockets matching high strength chains in important occasions with large stress. Cast iron sprockets are mainly used for sprockets with low precision requirements or complex shapes, such as ring sprockets.
