Gear and Gear Rack

A flat plate or straight bar is called a rack when it has a series of equally spaced teeth. Common rack is a special case of involute cylindrical gear. It is a cylindrical gear with infinite base circle radius and infinite number of teeth. It corresponds to involute cylindrical gear one by one, and is divided into spur gear rack, helical gear rack and herringbone gear rack. For the rack with linear (involute special case) tooth profile, the teeth are distributed on the flat plate. In all planes parallel to the indexing plane, the tooth pitch remains unchanged and equal to π m, and the pressure angle everywhere on the tooth profile remains unchanged and equal to the standard value α。 

Straight M1 gear rack 

A rack whose tooth line is perpendicular to the moving direction of the tooth is called a straight rack. That is, the rack whose tooth line is parallel to the matching gear axis. See "rack" (Figure 5-51).  

Inclined M1 gear rack 

The tooth line of a rack is a straight line inclined to the moving direction of the teeth, that is, the tooth line is at an acute angle with the axis of the matched gear β The rack is called inclined rack (Fig. 5-52).

Main features of M1 gear rack:

(1) Since the rack tooth profile is a straight line, all points on the tooth profile have the same pressure angle, which is equal to the inclination angle of the tooth profile. This angle is called the tooth profile angle, and the standard value is 20.

(2) Any straight line parallel to the addendum has the same pitch and modulus.

(3) The straight line parallel to the tooth top line and with the tooth thickness equal to the width of the tooth groove is called the dividing line (center line), which is the datum line for calculating the size of the rack.

Application scope of rack and pinion transmission:

1. Suitable for fast and accurate positioning mechanism

2. It is suitable for CNC machine tools, machining centers, cutting machines, welding machines, etc. with heavy load, high precision, high rigidity, high speed and long stroke

3. It is suitable for factory automation rapid transplanting machinery, industrial robot arm grabbing mechanism, etc
