There are two main types of spur pinion gears: external and internal. The outer gear has teeth cut on the outer surface of the cylinder. The two outer gears mesh together and rotate in opposite directions. In contrast, the internal gear has teeth cut on the inside surface of the cylinder. The external gear is located in the internal gear and rotates in the same direction. The internal gear assembly is more compact than the external gear assembly because the gear shafts are positioned closer together. The internal gear is mainly used for planetary gear transmission.

Spur pinion gears are generally considered the best choice for applications requiring deceleration and torque multiplication, such as ball mills and crushing equipment. Examples of high-speed applications using spur gears include consumer appliances such as washing machines and mixers. Although noise limits the use of spur gears in passenger cars, they are often used in aircraft engines, trains and even bicycles.

Spur gears can be made of metal (such as steel or brass) or plastic (such as nylon or polycarbonate). Gears made of plastic produce less noise at the cost of reducing strength and bearing capacity. Unlike other gear types, spur gears do not experience high losses due to sliding, so they usually have high transmission efficiency. Multiple spur gears (called gear trains) can be used in series to achieve large reduction ratios.
