The big end of the bevel pinion is the bottom; the small end of the bevel pinion is the top.
The pitch of the bevel is measured at the bottom (the largest teeth).
The term bevel pinion or bevel gear refers to a straight (or spur) bevel. It is actually a tapered spur gear.
Bevel gears can be also used for only changing the rotation direction of power transmission which are called miter gears.
For miter gears, input and output bevel gears have the same number of teeth.

The characteristic of bevel gear transmission is to reduce the tooth top height of the small end of the gear teeth, thus reducing the possibility of the tooth top being too sharp; The larger fillet radius of the tooth root is conducive to improving the bearing capacity of the gear teeth, tool life and oil storage lubrication. It is generally used in light load and low speed situations.
In general machinery, the intersection angle between two shafts of bevel gear pinion is equal to 90 ° (but it can also be different). Like cylindrical gears, bevel gears have indexing cones, addendum cones, root cones, and base cones. The cone has a big end and a small end, and the circles corresponding to the big end are called the dividing circle (whose radius is r), the addendum circle, the root circle and the base circle respectively. The motion of a pair of bevel gears is equivalent to the pure rolling of a pair of pitch cones.
The formation of tooth profile of bevel gear pinion is similar to that of cylindrical gear, but the difference is that the base cone is used instead of the base cylinder. As shown in the right figure, the generating surface S is tangent to the base cone bus. When the generating surface S rolls purely along the base cone, an involute surface will be formed in space by a straight line OK on the generating surface that contacts the generatrix ON of the base cone. This surface is the tooth profile surface of straight bevel gear. The locus of each point on the straight line OK is an involute (the involute at the vertex O is a point).
