Correct meshing conditions of a pair of helical gears set:

Meet the meshing conditions: if the normal vector at the contact point is perpendicular to the relative motion speed between them, they are correctly engaged. Any two involutes are meshed with each other. If the tooth pitch at the common normal is equal, they can be meshed correctly.

When the two meshing gear teeth contact, the force and reaction force between the tooth surfaces cause contact stress on the two working surfaces. Because the position of the meshing point changes and the gear moves periodically, the contact stress changes in a pulsating cycle.

Under the action of this alternating contact stress for a long time, small cracks will appear at the tool mark of the tooth surface. This kind of crack will gradually expand laterally on the surface. After the crack forms a ring, the surface of the gear tooth will produce a small area of peeling off and form some fatigue pits.

For open gear transmission or closed gear transmission containing unclean lubricating oil, due to the relative sliding between the meshing tooth surfaces, some hard abrasive particles enter the friction surface, which changes the tooth profile and increases the side clearance, so that the gear is excessively thinned, causing tooth fracture. In general, only when abrasive particles are mixed in the lubricating oil, will the gear surface be worn by abrasive particles during operation.

For high speed and heavy load gear transmission, due to the large friction between the tooth surfaces and the large relative speed, the temperature of the meshing area is too high. Once the lubrication condition is poor, the oil film between the tooth surfaces will disappear, making the metal surfaces of the two gear teeth directly contact, thus causing mutual adhesion. When the two tooth surfaces continue to move relative to each other, the harder tooth surface will tear off some materials on the softer tooth surface along the sliding direction to form grooves.
