lmost every new model and truck uses a serpentine drive belt. It is a single multi wedge belt that can drive all accessories, air conditioners, power steering, alternators and various other pumps and accessories. They don't need maintenance, unlike their predecessors' V-belts, which need regular adjustment. But the truth is, they won't last forever, and they really need to check frequently to prevent being stuck.

If it starts to deteriorate, you can replace the serpentine belt at the time you choose, rather than when the belt is your decision. Check the ribbed drive belt every time the oil is changed, and the position of the indicator light of the automatic adjustment mechanism can ensure that you will encounter a bad belt long before the belt is stuck.

The rule of thumb for serpentine belts is that if a 3 mm (1/8 inch) crack is observed around the belt, the belt may reach its end of life and should be considered a candidate for transformation. Small cracks with large intervals should not be considered as indicating that the belt needs to be replaced. However, the onset of fracture usually indicates that the tape is only about half its service life.
