Advantages of chain drive
A chain is defined as a series of links connected by pin joints. Likewise, chain drives consist of one or more chains, depending on the load the unit has to transmit. Therefore, they are mechanical operating systems that transmit the required power between two gears, called sprockets.
Chain drives are used in a wide range of power transmission applications such as bicycles, motorcycles, rolling mills, agricultural machinery, machine tools, conveyors, shearers, etc.
In addition, chain drives are divided into three categories according to their different appliances:
Lifting chains; transferring, raising or lowering heavy products from one place to another.
Conveyor chains; continuously move material by sliding, pulling or carrying in conveyors.
Power Transmission Chain; transmits mechanical power from one place to another.
In this article, we will discuss the powertrain. Therefore, the power transmission chain is divided into the following common types:
roller chain
Engineering Steel Chain
Welded steel chain
Forged Rivetless Chain
According to the characteristics, use and maintenance of chain drives, let's analyze their advantages and disadvantages.
The advantage is:
Chain drives can transmit large loads over long and short distances.
Wide selection of chains, sprockets and accessories to suit application requirements
The chain drive is very efficient - no slippage.
They are simple in design and easier to install and service. The chain drive can be repaired or replaced without disturbing the associated equipment.
Capable of operating in harsh application environments such as high ambient temperature, wet, oily and corrosive environments.
Motion can be transmitted to multiple axes using only one chain.
Some chain types, such as roller chains, can be easily cut from large batches into lengths, such as 100-foot reels, for use as needed.
Long shelf life as long as the factory protection oil is intact.
weakness is:
Standard chains can be noisy and vibrate due to metal-to-metal contact.
Lubricate and maintain frequently.
Compared with gear transmission, the load capacity is smaller.
