There are two width systems for V belts and pulleys, namely, the reference width system and the effective width system. The datum width system defines the groove type and size of the pulley based on the position and the datum width of the datum line. When the pitch surface of the V-belt coincides with the datum diameter of the pulley, the datum width of the pulley is the width of the corresponding position in the groove of the V-belt pitch wheel, which is used to represent the sectional characteristic value of the sheave. It is not affected by tolerance, and is the basic dimension for standardization of pulley and belt.

The effective width system stipulates that the outermost width of the edges on both sides of the wheel groove is the effective width. This dimension is not affected by the tolerance, and the diameter at the effective width of the wheel groove is the effective diameter.

Due to different size systems, the length of the belt is represented by the reference length and the effective length respectively. The reference length is the circumference of the V-belt at the place where the reference diameter of the pulley is measured under the specified tension; The effective length is the circumference at the place where the effective diameter of the pulley is measured under the specified tension.
